George Beyer was fatally injured in the line of duty and died on Saturday, August 21, 1915. A lieutenant of the No. 6 Engine Company in the Dubuque Fire Department, George was thrown from an auto truck while responding to an alarm and suffered a concussion of the brain. George was born in Dubuque on May 8, 1861, and made the city his home. He was a member of the fire department for 21 years. He was united in marriage to Amanda Norton on Sept. 27, 1883, and she survived him with the following children: Fred J., Mrs., May Lonergan, Mrs. Lucile Thomas, and Florence; one brother, William of Oskaloosa; three sisters, Miss Tillie of Davenport, Mrs. Frank Richards and Mrs. Philip Wildermuth of Geneseo, IL, all of whom were at his bedside when death came. By reason of his long service with the fire department, George was known to a legion of friends who sincerely mourn his passing. He was a faithful and devoted husband and father and his death is a loss to the community in which he had so long resided. Among his associates in the fire department his death is a personal loss for he was one of the oldest in point of service.
