Lewis M. Adams joined the Buffalo Volunteer Fire Department on July 5, 1949. This was a time of restructuring the department in the post-war years. Lewis, who was also mayor of the town during this period, was instrumental in securing the needed funds to accomplish this restructuring goal. During this period (1949-53) two new trucks were purchased and the outdated fire fighting equipment was updated. In 1954, Lewis who was a carpenter by trade, led a team of fire department members and town citizens in the designing and building of a new fire station. The building is still used today by the Buffalo Fire Department. On January 26, 1965, Lewis was appointed assistant chief and served in that capacity the next eight years. After 23 years of active and honorable service, Lewis retired to the ranks of honorary member. Lewis was very active in this role, providing direction, advice and guidance to the department. On June 25, 1998, after 49 years of devoted service to the department and the community, Lewis passed away. He was 76.
