Joseph Paul Hyler was born around 1911 in Ames, Iowa, and died on January 1O, 1963 in Ames. He is buried in the Ames Municipal Cemetery with Masonic Rites. Joe joined the Ames Fire Department in 1939, was appointed as lieutenant in March 1954 and assistant chief in November 1954. He was a member of the International Association of Firefighters; International Association of Arson Investigators; committee team captain of the Iowa State Center and First Aid Instructor for the West Story County chapter of the Red Cross. Joe suffered a fatal heart attack while teaching a first aid class in Roland, Iowa.
