  Bio Lee Bellmer was elected to the Independence Fire Department August 4, 1944. He was the department mechanic for 3O years and served as a part-time paid driver for four years. He was also assistant foreman for two years. Lee was active in the Buchanan County Firemen's Association. Lee died October 13, 1981, while still an active fire fighter. He and his wife, Ida, had one daughter who passed away during birth in 1938. Ida's life was taken in 1959 as a result of a carbon monoxide leak in their home.
