Bio
Jim Dyre was born on November 30, 1930, to Viva and Beatrice Dyre. He lived on a farm north of Cartersville and attended school in Mason City until junior high and then attended high school in Rockwell, Iowa, graduating in 1948. He entered the U.S. Marine Corps in 1951 and received an honorable discharge in 1953. He married Colleen Caldwell on September 27, 1951. Jim worked for PG&E in 1954, later Interstate Power, retiring in 1993. Jim was a member of the Clear Lake Volunteer Fire Department for more than 16 years and served as fire chief from 1976 to 1982. He was president of the Iowa Firemen's Association from 1986 to 1987. Jim was also a lifetime member of Iowa Fire Service Instructors and taught many fire classes throughout Iowa, enjoying passing on his knowledge to fellow firefighters, young and old, training them on how to be safe and how to keep others safe too. Jim's legacy to the fire service is evident in his family, with his children, sons-in-law, and even grandchildren volunteering on their local fire departments. Knowing what he has left behind just shows the type of man Jim was and we, along with the Fire Service of Iowa, are proud to call him our own.
