Bio
H.P. Hansen was a member of the Manning Volunteer Fire Department continuously from July 5, 1897 until sometime in 1916. After a gap of one year (likely for service in World War I) he is recorded as being a member again from October 1918 to November 1918. During the period of 1897 to 1916, he served as secretary for six years (191O-1916). He was also a member of the department's world-record running team. Herman P. Hansen was born March 10, 1875, in Germany, and died a week before his 74th birthday at the Manning General Hospital. He had been a patient there about two weeks and had been in ill health for some time. H.P. had been a partner in the general merchandise firm of Hansen Brothers, now the Hansen-Pahde store. He was also engaged in banking a number of years. Later, he traveled for the Dultmeier Manufacturing Company. He had been retired about two and a half years when he died. Active in civic affairs, he had served on the Manning Board of Education a number of years and had been township clerk for 25 years. His wife, whose maiden name was Nora Karsten, preceded him in death. A son Lawrence also died earlier. He was survived by four sons, two daughters, eight grandchildren, one brother and one sister.
